The Miracle of Mercy

Caressing a leaf,
Fallen from the tree of life,
I trace the intricate veins
With the tip of my finger.

What things that tree has seen
Over eons of history,
A tortured pattern
Of vicious destruction.

The human race,
Seeking to dominate,
May in turn eradicate
All life from earth.

On that final day,
We will shed a tear
For the broken promises,
The wicked schemes.

Oh, in so many ways,
How things have gone awry.
Brother killing brother,
The best have shown themselves

To be far from perfect.
But in these jaded times,
All of us have to pull together,
For no one person has the strength

To carry all the wounded,
To heal all the hurting,
To mend all the broken
Tapestries of life.

When we bind ourselves
To each other,
When we lay our bodies down,
So that another creature

Can make it one more day,
We become an integral part
Of the redemption of humankind,
And the miracle of mercy.

Trouble

Stepping across
An infinite chasm,
I see the glint
Of your shiny, white teeth.

Are you asking
For forgiveness,
Or are you not
Sorry at all?

Making amends
Heals the wound,
But tomorrow,
We start digging again.

How many times
Do we have to go
Down the same road
Before we realize

It’s a dead end?

Maybe there is hope
For two souls
Entwined in love
And struggle.

Maybe through the
Crucible of pain
We can be forged
Into something

Entirely different.

All our faults,
Our insecurities
And weaknesses…
Can they create?

Strength in weakness.
Is it possible?
Can we turn the tables
On logic?

I hope so.
If not, we’re in trouble.

The Motions

Marching down the aisle,
I see you coming
From far away, somehow.
Are you the same?

You tender such a plus
To say you are fine.
You don’t refer to us
When you complain.

How is it that we
Always come to this,
Spinning in circles,
Never ending?

It seems like
The same old thing
Happening again.
What is true?

Is this real,
Or an illusion?
Are we in love,
Or just going through

The motions?

Happy?

Laughing upside down,
Turning round and round.
Running down to where
I found you on the stairs.

Hell, if I know.
Can’t you see how angry I am?
Can’t you feel the fleas
Biting you, happily?

Are you my friend?
Sometimes, I don’t know.
Often, I feel like I am
All alone.

Who was that on the phone?
Was it the one that was
To blame for all these things
That tear me from you from me?

How happily you say that
When you tell me
How much you hate to see
Things come together rhythmically.

Are you really here?
Will you be staying long?
Will my frown turn to a smile
When I see you come clean?

What do you think
It looks like to be happy?
Who do you think
Is really that way?

Anybody?

So how are you?
I’m fine today
But yesterday

Was awful!

What do you think
Of my hair?
It’s pink, I know.
I tried to dye it but

I messed up.

So, how’s the weather
Where you’re from?
It’s dandy here,
So come get some.

Come here!

Do you like
Cream and sugar
Or do you like it
Black?

Pick your poison.

What is your
Favorite color?
Mine is blue.
Same with you?

Cool.

Straight Ahead

Living straight is living slow,
But slow is better than you know.
Catching fire at every step
Is not the wish of those now left.

Doing what needs to be done
Is best for all that know His love.
Being there for those in need
Finds the sheep and sets them free.

How it goes does keep the flow.
All together is what they know.
Doing right and doing well,
Keeping others out of hell.

Jesus saves and kingdom comes.
End is near, so say some.
They don’t know but it could be.
Knowing Him, a righteous glee.

So it comes, now is the time.
Do your best and pray for the rest.
Line ’em up and get in line.
Judgment’s here, so take the test.

Peanut

Gentle puppy,
You weren’t always that way.
There was a time
When you were the most

Dangerous ankle-biter on the block!
Let our niece and nephew chase you
Into a corner, and you were a force
To be reckoned with!

And, oh, how you loved to steal food!
We would catch you on a chair
Stretching your neck and your tongue
To lick the dinner plates on the table.

Then there was the M&Ms that
Mysteriously were losing their color.
We thought the sun was doing it,
Until we spotted you licking them one day.

And we never did get you completely
House-trained. Many were the times
That you got popped on the behind
For leaving a “deposit” in the house.

Your breath was atrocious,
Because your teeth were bad.
The vet gave you until 15.
You made it to 16, proving him wrong.

Couldn’t see or hear anymore,
Couldn’t hold your bowels,
Couldn’t swallow dry dog food,
But you were a survivor. You showed

You still had fight in you when
You got bathed (which was often).
You wrestled with your blankets,
Like you always had, growling away.

After all your feistiness,
You could be so sweet,
Snoozing away the day.
You liked things quiet.

Never did get used to the vacuum.
You were like Don Quixote, charging
at the windmill. You gave up
No ground to your enemy!

And now, after all is over,
You dance and play
At Rainbow Bridge
With Miles, Sunni, Toby and Al dog.

You suffer no more.
And that is the way it should be,
For a faithful pet like you
Deserves the best that God can offer.

Making Up

Lovey dovie!
Here it comes,
Time to make up
After that fight we had

Earlier this week.
Roses, candy,
A night on the town.
Does it all make it better?

Probably not.
Perhaps, I’m sorry,
And I love you
Might work a bit better.

I understand,
You are right.
It’s my fault.
I forgive you.

There, it’s out.
Sometimes
Groveling
Goes a long way.

Chasing Our Tails

Happy go puppy,
Round and round,
Chasing your tail.

What I wouldn’t give
To enjoy life that much.
Then again, maybe not.

After all,
What does it cost
To abandon one’s belongings?

What does it cost to live simply?
What does it cost
To bring oneself to the point
That you can be that happy

Over something so small?

Are we spoiled?
Probably.
Are we living in a way
That is too complicated?

Are we really just
Chasing our own tail,
Metaphorically speaking,
In all our crazy pursuits?

Our hobbies,
Our commitments,
Our relationships,
Our conversations?

Our jobs,
Our belongings,
Our habits,
Our rituals?

Is it all,
As Solomon once said,
A “chasing after the wind”?

Maybe if Solomon was a dog,
He would have said it is all
A chasing after one’s tail.

Hmmmm…

Zero

My name is hanky.
How do you do?
I am free to come through
Anything.

What time did you say
The earth was supposed to explode?
Anytime now, you say?
Sounds smurfy to me!

So, why did the chicken cross the interstate?
Because he felt like it, of course.
What is your number?
Mine is zero.

Who was that masked man?
Batman, Zorro, the Lone Ranger?
Happy is the creature
That knows where to hide.

Hello from Mars!
When does the clock strike three hundred?
Sift your sugar
And the cookies will be neat.

Rainbows follow me
Everywhere that I go.
So, I say hello to them,
But they don’t answer.

That’s how it goes sometimes,
I guess.
