Circles of Insanity

Softly sleeping in the folds
Of silky swabs on the deck
Of a sailing ship,

Echoes of rhythmic pounding
Drive through my aching temples.
Who is the captain of this roguish craft?

Who gave the orders to
Run a rampage through the hearts
Of innocents, to cast a dark shadow
On the wretched faces of children?

Only somber tones can soothe
The memory of that castigation.
Only blood can satiate
The appetite of such hungry wolves.

Who would be so uncouth
As to disturb the peace and order
Of a simple man and his wife
Dining in the privacy of their home?

Who would be so rebellious
As to eat the flesh of a sacred cow,
Such as one that hovers nearby
A holy temple?

Only the whispers of a lovely pixie,
Dizzily dancing round and round
A bonfire in the depths of the
Ancient forest can come close

To enchanting this unworthy
Troll that casts a horrible stench
Across these pristine hills.
What is worth her ritual?

Who can begin to imagine
What demons lurk behind
Jagged rocks and at the bottom
Of such abysmal pits?

Who is willing to march across
Abandoned cities, pillaged
To the extreme, sacrificed to
The appetite of barbarous dogs?

How can one come to grips
With the secret blessings that hide
In the recesses of one’s mind,
Accessed solely by nymphs,

Loathed even by the heartiest of
Gargoyles, cursed with the shame
Of encountering the reflection
Of their offspring’s soul?

How I weep at the glimpse
Of my only morsel of redemption,
Hiding in this minuscule kernel
Of truth, buried underneath

Millions of centuries of lies, rumors,
Tales and sweeping romantic
Reunions between lonely
Peasants, clinging to hope,

Ready to die at the first symbol
Of heavenly, cascading rivers of light!
“To be young again!” they scream.
To be free of this overwhelming

Nightmare, to escape the tortuous
Gaze of the wild doe, caught in a trap
Of spikes and razor blades.
Lost is the promise of deliverance,

Once again.

Yesterday

Happy, clinging,
Jumping, screaming;
Living, dreaming,
Hoping, scheming…

If you like,
We could be a tribe.
If you want,
You could take a bribe.

Lonely, sinning,
Losing, winning;
Sometimes the cookie
Crumbles softly…

Sometimes there’s
No silver lining.
Sometimes the dice
Roll my way.

If only, if only…

If only there was
One more day.
If only I had
One more dollar.

Can you hear me holler
From the end of this
Rainbow?
No pot of gold here!

An angel face
Is just around
The corner store
In Santa town.

A bride is waiting
In the wings
For that day
You’ve been waiting for.

Holy oaths
Will be sworn
Today, but
Yesterday

Was a different story…

If only you knew.

You

Sitting here,
As thoughts drift
Through my tired mind,

Thoughts of you.

I know you don’t realize
What a blessing you are
To so many around you.

I know you have no idea
How special you are.
But you are very special.

I would not choose
To spend my life
With anyone but you.

My life is forever changed
By having you in it.

I have strength
To make it through
The hard times

Because of you.

The good times
Are so much better
Because you are with me.

I hope one day,
You understand
What a wonderful person

You are to me.

You

Sitting here,
As thoughts drift
Through my tired mind,

Thoughts of you.

I know you don’t realize
What a blessing you are
To so many around you.

I know you have no idea
How special you are.
But you are very special.

I would not choose
To spend my life
With anyone but you.

My life is forever changed
By having you in it.

I have strength
To make it through
The hard times

Because of you.

The good times
Are so much better
Because you are with me.

I hope one day,
You understand
What a wonderful person

You are to me.

UFOs (part 3)

(Continued from part 2…)

Her thoughts were somehow
Being transferred to my mind.
The creature had a gift:
Telepathy.

But I had just seen that this
Was a sensitive situation.
She had most likely killed,
Then eaten, a human being.

She was a threat, I thought.
But she was not trying to
Kill me. Instead she was
Chosing to communicate–Why?

I just couldn’t make sense of
This awkward predicament.
As I was wrestling with the
Decision of what to do next,

She spoke again:
“What is your name, young one?”
“My name is Christopher,” I said.
“My friends call me Chris.”

“Nice to meet you, Chris.
“My name is Tanara.
“I am from the city of
Machooby, on the planet called

Rithfoci.
It is many light years from
This planet, in fact, it is in
A different galaxy.”

“Wow!” I said. How did you
Get here? And why did you
Kill that person, and eat them,
And feed them to your babies?

We had to travel for a very
Long time to get here, and
We had nothing to eat.
The other human was trying to

Attack my babies.
He caught them in a net,
And he probably would have
Either sold them into

Slavery for a menagerie,
Or killed them and eaten them.
I had to fight him when
He captured them.

I tried to talk peaceably to him,
But he would not listen to reason.
He would not talk to me, but chose
To fight me to the death instead.

After I killed him, I hated to let
the meat go to waste,
or to the birds, or
The hyenas, or the worms.

He was quite tasty,
Although I have never eaten
Human before, so I have
nothing to compare him to.

On my planet we mostly eat
What you would call
Fruits and vegetables.
They are very nutritious,

Although I sometimes yearn
For something else to tickle
My fancy. You better watch out,
I may get a “hankering” for you!

“Well, that’s good to know.
At least I know where you stand,”
I said.

UFOs (part 2)

(Continued from part 1…)

The small creatures gathered
At the bottom of the large tree,
And then the larger creature
Started chewing up whatever

Was in its mouth, then
Dropping pieces down to the ground,
Where the babies eagerly
Gobbled them up.

That’s when I saw it: an arm.
A human arm. It was badly maimed,
But I could still make out
A hand, with partially chewed up…

Fingers. Yuck! And…yikes!
Was this creature a predator?
That would make me the prey.
Perhaps this was how cavemen felt!

But it couldn’t be a pterodactyl,
Could it? After all this time?
I had bent down low behind
A large rock, probably in much

The same way that a Neanderthal
Would have, so long ago.
I really was no expert on dinosaurs,
But I stared at the creature,

Trying to make sense of it all.
As I stared at, I guess, “her”,
She seemed to sense my gaze.
She turned from her babies

And looked right at me!
I wasn’t fooling her.
She knew very well that I was there,
She just didn’t really care.

That should have been no surprise,
But I was used to being
At the top of the food chain,
Not someone else’s potential lunch!

As she stared back at me,
Two really weird things happened:
First, I couldn’t believe it,
But her eyes appeared to glow!

Sort of the way the embers
Of a wood fire do.
The glow fluctuated,
Then went very bright.

Just then, I heard a voice,
Like a woman, saying,
“Hello, human.”
I looked around,

Wondering where the voice
Was coming from.
There was nobody around but “her”.
And she was not talking,

At least not with her mouth.
Her mouth was still chewing
And spitting out remains
To her young.

But she was still staring at me
With those glowing eyes.
Her greeting reminded me
Of my thoughts earlier,

When I first saw the younger
Creatures flying: maybe aliens?
Is that possible?
For a second I chuckled,

Thinking I must be losing it for sure.
How could I even consider that?
Aliens, from another planet?
That’s crazy!

Then I heard her voice again:
“Greetings, young one.”
Now I haven’t considered myself
Young for quite a while, so

At first I thought that maybe
She was speaking to someone else.
Then I realized:
She wasn’t talking,

She was thinking.

(To be continued…)

UFOs (part 1)

One warm summer evening,
I was taking a walk in the woods.
I was winding down a trail
That eventually came out in a clearing.

Looking up, I saw a flock
Of bird-like animals on the horizon.
Squinting into the sunset,
I tried to make out what they were.

Something hissed,
And then I knew: they were not birds.
Some sort of flying reptiles,
Apparently.

A group of them alighted
On a tree limb nearby.
Creeping up upon them,
I was amazed at their beauty.

With a leanness not common
In humans, they had a shiny
Olive skin that glistened in the twilight.
It occurred to me that maybe

They were not earthly creatures at all.
Perhaps, for it has been millions of
Centuries since the pterodactyl
Roamed these skies.

Just then, a loud cry emitted
From the mouth of one of them.
Then they all started to cry out.
I didn’t know what to think.

Was it me they were reacting to?
Out of the corner of my eye,
I noticed something large
In the distance, rapidly approaching.

As it got closer, I realized it must be
About the size of a small airplane!
I decided that maybe I should
Take cover, so

I crept away, back to what I considered
To be a safe distance.
It must be their mother, I thought.
The creature landed at the top

Of a much larger tree, near the tree where the smaller creatures were.
Now I saw that the larger creature
Had something in its mouth.

(To be continued…)

Either Way on Either Side

I see you there, hoping
For something new.
Waiting and moping,
Feeling rather blue.

You only wish
There was a finer dish
To occupy your taste buds
Than the awful dose of crud

That fills your bowl.
You begin to howl,
But it is all in vain.
You are out in the rain,

Shivering from the cold.
You want to take a risk,
Something big and very bold,
So you throw a kind of disk

Up in the air, then catch it close.
The route is planned.
You’re so morose.
Your book is banned,

That is for sure.
You tempt with such allure.
Are you here with something more,
Or just reciting from folklore?

Only one will get through.
It may be me, it may be you.
But that is neither here nor there.
I will follow her up the stairs.

Kingdom come is falling now.
Angels dance and gods will bow.
Are you free to be somehow?
Feel it boom and go “Ka-pow!”

Let’s go to the store.
I will sit and start to roar!
We can have a lot of fun
As we slide, then start to run.

Will you come or will you hide?
Will you jump, then start to glide?
Take them now for a ride.
Either way on either side.

Such a Bore

Hen-pecked, tried and true.
Rearranged, then cried, “I love you!”
Do you dare, or do you dare?
Wonder where the fun is coming from?

Are you solvent, or just a tease?
Come down softly, bending knees.
See the logo, flying flags!
Hear the anthem, the verse now lags.

Are you an angel or a jungle gym?
The cage you sleep in with him
Reeks of dogs with fleas!
Do you wage a different kind of peace?

I claim the mountain until the end!
I refuse to break or even bend!
I will not go to and fro!
I won’t be the one who won’t say no!

Can we meet halfway there?
Do you think I am a bear?
Forest pixies laugh and shout.
They know you and will find you out.

Catching something in the air,
Closing lids and combing hair
Is such a bore when I want more
Than just hello and you don’t care.

The Unexpected

Claim a spot on the ground.
Jump up to the sky to see
A different view for a change.
Something different always helps

Clear the air and clear your head.
Wouldn’t it be nice to do
Something different every day?
But it would be chaos!

We would never know what to expect.
We would have to stay alert
All the time for the next random
Problem. We would live in fear.

So maybe the same old, same old
Is not so bad sometimes.
At least we can rest a little bit
In comfort, knowing at least

To some extent what will happen
In our crazy lives each day.
Of course we don’t always know
What people will say or do

In any given day,
But we know what is expected of us.
We have a routine,
At least most of us.

We do this because it works.
There is relative security in our minds
With the feeling that we are okay,
We know what comes next.

So, next time you are bored,
Perhaps you should consider
The alternative:
Fear.
